Parents in Great Expectations Essay
Examine how Dickens portrays the incompetence of parents Great Expectations by Charles Dickens is a bildungsroman, which is primarily concerned about the literal and metaphorical metamorphosis of the central protagonist, Pip. However, Dickens main thrust is that of parenting through the utilization of Mrs. Joe Gargery and Miss Havisham to establish their injustices towards children. Miss Havisham from an affluent class abuses her privileges of being a parent by using Estella, her adopted daughter to attack the male gender. In contrast, Mrs. Joe Gargery is from a lower class, yet she too torments pip, but through physical and verbal means. Through Miss Havisham and Mrs. Joe, Dickens damââ¬â¢s the ethical codes of the rich and the poor and moreover, conveys that the incompetence of parents that transcend economic boundaries. Contrastingly, Charles Dickens utilizes Mr. Joe Gargery as the leading embodiment of how parents should be offering Pip wisdom, but more importantly love and friendship. In the beginning, Dickens emphasizes the ill treatment of children in a low-class through the use of Mrs. Joe Gargery. Mrs.à Joeââ¬â¢s apron symbolizes her unwillingness to perform her expected role and acts as a reminder of the troubles Pip gives her: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ I may truly say Iââ¬â¢ve never had this apron of mine off, since born you were. Itââ¬â¢s bad enough to be a blacksmithââ¬â¢s wife (and him a Gargery) without being your mother. ââ¬Å"(Pg 7) Mrs. Joe makes Pip feel guilty by reminding him of her domestic slavery. Thus, Pip is left feeling like he warrants all the abuse Mrs. Joe inflicts upon him. Moreover the ââ¬Å"coarseâ⬠apron, ââ¬Å"stuck full of pins and needles,â⬠reflects Mrs. Joeââ¬â¢s unapproachable and unloving nature. Also Through this Dickensââ¬â¢s mocks the traditional gender roles in the Victorian times, as Mrs. Joe is perceived to be more masculine. Other incidents of Mrs. Joeââ¬â¢s rough behavior towards Pip further highlights the injustices of children. Mrs. Joeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"trenchantâ⬠way of preparing meals portrays her negative attitude towards Pip and Mr. Joe. The adjective ââ¬Å"trenchantâ⬠implies a deliberate and hurtful action. ââ¬Å"She jammed the loaf hard and fast against her bib ââ¬â where it sometimes got a pin into it, and sometimes a needle, which we afterwards go into our mouthsâ⬠. (pg 8) This is peculiar for a married woman, of a mature age to be acting in this way. In addition this again demolishes the stereotypical mother figure. Furthermore, Dickens depicts the incompetence of parents in a wealthy class through Miss Havishamââ¬â¢s exploitation of Estella to highlight the ill treatment of children. Miss Havisham wallows in self-pity because the person she loved left her alone, on her wedding day. Miss. Havisham never recovered or allowed herself to recover. Her bluntness and harshness was not coming from a rude old lady, but more from a lonely women trying to break free and escape. Miss Havisham surrounds herself in an environment that reflect her inner feelings: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ The passages were darkâ⬠¦ â⬠(p. 57) This can be seen as suppression; keeping her problems inside and letting them kill her slowly. How she damages herself harms Estella as well. Estella was raised in a controlled environment, and psychologically disturbed by Miss. Havisham. Miss. Havisham sayââ¬â¢s she cannot love anymore because of her uncontrollable suspicion that everyone is out to hurt her; hence Estella will never experience love. By adopting Estella, it shows her longing for companion ââ¬â however hides this by claiming it is only for training purposes to break all menââ¬â¢s hearts. Because of this Estella will never know what real love is. On the other hand, Dickens use of Mr. Joe exhibits elements of hope and contrastingly conveys the humanity of parents. Mr. Joe is not just a father figure to Pip, but as an ââ¬Å"equalâ⬠too: ââ¬Å"I always treated him as a large species of child and no more than my equalâ⬠This quotation exhibits the genuine love Pip has for Joe and their close relationship. Mr. Joe conveys an interest about Pipââ¬â¢s education: ââ¬Å"I say, Pip, old chap! â⬠cried Joe, opening his blue eyes wide, ââ¬Å"what a scholar you are. Anââ¬â¢t you? â⬠(p. 42) Joe is proud of Pip and doesnââ¬â¢t want Pip to be uneducated like him. He treats Pip like his own, even though he is adopted. He admits in Chapter seven that the only reason he is staying with Mrs. Joe is solely because of Pip. Lastly, Joeââ¬â¢s acceptance of Pip back into his house again reinforces his father qualities. Through Joe, Pip realizes the importance of family and friendship. In addition appreciates his relationship with Joe. Ironically, Dickens had a life somewhat similar to that of Pipââ¬â¢s life. Dickens grew up in Kent and moved to London, like Pip. His mother made him work in a Blacking warehouse at age twelve due to his fatherââ¬â¢s financial dilemmas. This incident in his life trampled him psychologically. Through his experience, Dickensââ¬â¢s sympathizes for children and mocks the abuse of children in society as a whole. Dickens wrote strongly about people who ill-treated children through his novels, for example Oliver Twist. The underlying fact, in ââ¬ËGreat Expectationsââ¬â¢, is that parents lack sufficient love for the maintenance of emotional stability in their children.

Does Television Have Educational Value
Does television have educational value? Television, like anything else, has as much educational value as you allow it to. For example, television documentaries and sitcoms serve to reinforce or challenge societal norms and ideologies while reality television shows, in general, are intended to challenge long held beliefs and traditions. In contrast, Networks like as PBS and Nickelodeon educate young minds and the several hundred cable channels serve to support the education, whether easily apparent or trans[arentt, provided by the shows I've already mentioned as well as others. Therefore I would argue that television has significant educational value you only has to channel surf to seâ⬠that. It highly depends on what you watch. It used to be true that it had no educational value, when TV was nothing more than sit-coms and cartoons and soap operas. But, today you actually have educational options to television viewing. There's a number of different History channels, and The scienc e channel, just to name two that have very good, documentaries.News programming offers up political debates and commentaries, that we all need to hear and process. PBS has some good children's programming that teaches kids alot of valuable things. Personally Iââ¬â¢d prefer to read than to learn anything from the television. Television focuses more on the visual aspect than the substantive. It pulls your mind in different directions. When you're reading, it's just you and the words, so I think you'd retain the material better than TV. It also depends on what you are watching and how much.I think if parents are afraid of their children watching too much television and not benefiting from it that they should monitor what their child watches. Make sure they know what the kid watches so that they know what the child is learning from it. Regulate television watching time and what is and what is not appropriate to watch. Watch together and talk about what the child watches and share the discussion. Most important of all, I think people should keep in mind that though television is tuned on for entertainment, it can also inform, enrich, and educate.

Okonkwo vs Unoka essays
Okonkwo vs Unoka essays Chinua Achebes novel Things Fall Apart is a story about the coming of the white man to Africa and their influence in the ultimate destruction of the primitive, tribal lifestyle of the Africans. Achebe hints at the chaos that arises when a system collapses, and he shows this through Okonkwos and Unokas characters. Although both Okonkwo and Unoka had different circumstances for their deaths, both characters shared a similar fate in that both were unable to adapt to the changing society around them. This is supported through the differing lifestyles of Okonkwo and Unoka, and also through Achebes underlying theme about the effect of society on an individual. The Ibo tribe viewed Unoka as an efulefu, or a person who does not hold any status and was generally ignored by the clan. In his day he was lazy and improvident and was quite incapable of thinking about tomorrow (Achebe 4). By the standards of the clan, Unoka was a coward and a squanderer because he never took a title in his life, borrowed money from his clansmen, and rarely repaid his debts. Also, he never became a warrior because of the fact that he feared the sight of blood. Yet, although he did not rank high in the tribes political and social hierarchy, Unoka was a skilled musician and had a gentle attitude towards life. Unoka was more of a romantic, which set him apart from the chauvinistic ideals of the Ibo tribe. It was because of this, that when Unoka became ill, the tribe neglected to help him but rather felt he deserved to be thrown into the evil forest to die. Had Unoka tried to conform to the standards of the tribe and acted less indolently, he may have stood a better c hance of survival. Unlike Unoka, Okonkwo strived to make a name for himself in a world that valued manliness. Due to the embarrassment he felt over the humiliating and dishonorable lifestyle of his father his whole life was dominated by ...

Differences Between Private And Public English Language Schools In Dissertation
Differences Between Private And Public English Language Schools In Northern Cyprus - Dissertation Example In Cyprus, as elsewhere ââ¬â the ongoing race of education as it keeps pace with technology opens up the potential to establish the fabled global village with respect to the development of human capacities through modern educational institutions now becoming available in North Cyprus. The value of specialized language education programs is recognized throughout Europe and neighboring regions. Across a diverse continent, and nearby islands there is considerable potential for Diversity ââ¬â but also a similar potential for isolation and prejudice as existed in centuries past. Among one of the central tenets of the European Union is the promotion of mobility and communication within the population of Europe and neighboring regions. The most immediate and practical way to address the need for equality and mobility is through a policy of linguistic equality. The goal of multilingualism is achievable through the promotion and facilitation of a common language or languages among diverse groups in formerly isolated regions to create a broader cultural framework in which populations can move and interact with one another more freely, as well as receive visitors from other countries and more readily accommodate them for educational and economic purposes. With different languages endemic to various regions throughout the greater European sphere, the teaching of English opens up expanded opportunities for communication and concourse both for travelers from their native lands, and to receive visitors for the economic invigoration of islands such as Cyprus. English remains a popular choice, and a useful starting point for an overall goal of multilingual aptitude throughout Europe and the Mediterranean region. Turkish Cyprus boasts a large population of expatriate English speakers, but with less tourism in the Turkish north, demand is somewhat le ss for new English speakers as language instructors than the Greek South. Throughout the island, the state system boasts widespread English instruction, and while there are private English-language academies of various quality and price throughout the country, academies include primary and secondary schools in English. But there are smaller numbers of Russian, French, and Greek academies as well. English-speaking academies tend to be fewer in number in Turkish areas (Global-English.com, 2010). In terms of the political geography of the region, the island is divided into the Turkish north, officially known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus ââ¬â

Introduction to the Home Health Agency Role Essay
Introduction to the Home Health Agency Role - Essay Example Most skills trainings for HHAs are taught by other healthcare professionals, and they usually learned on the job. Generally, their trainings are molded around the unique needs of the patient. Depending on the level of complication of the clientââ¬â¢s illness, the HHAs trainings could be done in a few hours to a few days. For more complex cases, some employers provide training classes, which the aspiring HHA has to pass before they are given a job. There is no license for HHAs, but there are some employers who would rather hire certified HHAs. The certification process includes an examination and 75 hours of training and skills testing. Other requirements may include a background check of candidates, before enrolling them to a program, due to the high trust nature of the job. Sometimes, health screenings may be required to prevent patients from contracting diseases from their caregivers. 2.0 Purpose and Goals of Home Care Home care involves a wide scope of care for a wide variety o f patients outside the hospital setting. The services that home health care companies provide can range from nursing care, physical therapy, and even occupation therapy from qualified medical professionals to smaller services from home health aides. The care provided could be as simple as assistance in everyday activities, such as bathing and eating, to more complex services requiring more specialized professionals. Essentially, the purpose and goal of home care is to provide an adequate level of care usually achievable at the hospital, and bring it to the patientââ¬â¢s home. 3.0 Members of the Home Health Care Team (With Functions and Interaction) Physician. Physicians perform home visits to the patient at regular intervals wherein they assess the patient in an environment that he or she is more comfortable. They assess how the patient handles his or her illness at home. They also regularly check and make adjustments and interventions when necessary. There are two ways in which physicians can function in the home health care setting. First, they rely on the home health care nurse, as the leader, mediator, and coordinator of the group, leaving them to be the evaluator of the patientââ¬â¢s health, which is to be coordinated with the rest of the team by the nurse. Second, they are the one who will lead the team by taking a more active role in patient care. The mnemonic INHOMESSS enumerates the roles of the physician including immobility, nutrition, home environment, other home health care members, medications examination, safety, spiritual health, and services by home health agencies. Furthermore, at the patientââ¬â¢s home, physicians will be able to get a more in-depth assessment of aspects of the patientââ¬â¢s life that is not normally accessible from the hospital setting. Moreover, they can look for environmental factors found in the home that can affect the patientââ¬â¢s illness; they can see how the patient acts in a more comfortable setting than in a hospital, and they can assess the patientââ¬â¢s compliance with the therapeutic regimen including diet, exercise, and medications. From these observations, they can identify faults in the patientââ¬â¢s activities and make interventions to change them for the patientââ¬â¢s health. They can also assess the tasks of the health care team and change them to suit better with the therapeutic regimen, especially if they are the one functioning as a team leader and a coordinator. Nurse. Most of the care

Edgar Allan Poes The Tell Tale Heart Essay Example for Free
Edgar Allan Poes The Tell Tale Heart Essay Edgar Allan Poes The Tell Tale Heart relates the story of one mans obsession at the seemingly trifle and otherwise common place prospect of the gaze of anothers eyes. So consumed is this person of his obsession with the eyes belonging to his tenent or landlord that one night he decides to gouge it off, kill its owner, and bury the eyeball in question under the floorboard. Needless to say, Edgar Allan Poe succeeds in exacting yet another dose of terror, dread and trepidation from his readers. The stated sentiments exist partly because of the plot, but largely because of Poes use of visual imagery, characterized by words which harp on the senses as people perceive it. à à à à à à à à à à à These perceptions, the heightened sensations that the narrator, who is in fact, also the murderer in the story, feels à in the extent of the short story is given structure by the way which he proceeds to talk of his victim. He writes first of being alluded to the eye, not being particularly attached to it initially, but describing it with an endearment out of place, and with a distinction which one would not normally employ when referring to something as ordinary as one of the five senses, except perhaps if people were talking about their lovers (which the narrator is not). His interest shifts and evolves as the story progresses. Talk of the eye in question becomes irrational to the point of alarming, and readers know at this point that something ominous is about to ensue. The narrator begins to talk distinctly of the eye as it were a separate entity, separate from that of its owner, the landlord, who he admits of being nothing but kind, and not having mistreated him in any way. His loving and long winded descriptions regarding, and romancing the eye in question, and the person to whom it belongs to culminates in a course of action which brings him to the landlords bedroom in the middle of the night. While in the victims sleep, he decides to take the eye for himself, and he describes it with such loving and final triumph as though it were a destiny and an important task that had long been awaiting fruition, and the time has come for it to bear fruit. à à à à à à à à à à à More than what has already been narrated and told in the plot, the story tells of one mans obsessive longing, his ascension to insanity (or a closely related version of it) because of the pursuit of that longing, and the consummation of the same longing and madness by means of taking matters into his own hands, and literally plucking out from the face of the earth what had been bothering him for so long. Although not the most pleasant of activities, and certainly not the one people would resort to as a matter of routine or principle. But for the narrator, for the person who needed to put an end to this longing, this itch, this gap which need to be filled, it meant the world and more. It meant a sense of triumph. It indulged his senses and satisfied his itch for an irrational but complex need to fill up a gap in his inner being and sanctum. Despite the questionable ethical as well as moral tendency with which he proceeded in committing the crime, to him it was a necessary road to ease and fulfillment. A Poem As It Regards to the Tell Tale Heart True, people are kind and truer still, people are beautiful but beauty exists in fewer instances these days. In smaller and smaller and smaller packages. So come dearest, let us you and me die
